Drew sat frozen in place. It was as if he were back on the Hell-evator, strapped in and waiting for the mechanism to release the suspended seat and send him plunging down the side of the spire at breakneck speed.

But the drop never came.

He just hung up there, where the air was thin and cold, as wave upon wave of blood crashed at his temples in a dizzying series of slow-driving throbs, like the hammering pulse of some massive mythical beast.

“I can understand your shock,” Logan said calmly. “But if you’ll allow it, I can explain. It’s not quite what you’re thinking. It’s more . . . complicated.”

Drew remained perfectly still, suspended at that towering height, still waiting for the fall.

“You need to understand that my former au pair wasn’t quite the angel portrayed in the myriad articles you’ve undoubtedly discovered online. She was in fact quite the opposite. Though not inherently wicked—at least not until that Halloween night—Marilyn possessed certain . . . abilities. Nothing like what you see in movies or on TV. She couldn’t set someone on fire with her eyes or use telekinesis to flip over buses, or anything like that. She didn’t chant spells over a cauldron or fly on a broomstick, either.

“But she did possess certain powers, among them the ability to make you see things that weren’t actually there. You’ve experienced this little phenomenon firsthand, that night at the amusement park when you and L got on the Hell-evator. The three boys standing in the tunnel. Do you remember L telling you that they weren’t really there, that they were just imaginary, and to open your eyes and they would go away? And it worked, didn’t it? When you opened your eyes, they were gone, weren’t they?”

Drew felt himself nodding from that place where he remained suspended, still waiting for the imminent fall, and Logan went on.

“She could also get you to do things . . . things that you would never dream of doing under normal circumstances . . . like stepping onto the tracks of a roller coaster.”

There was a flicker in Drew’s eyes, just a tiny one, but Logan caught it and nodded grimly. He took a measured breath before continuing.

“On that particular Halloween—the night she died—she used that power on me. She’d had an argument with Martyn. He’d come over to her house, where she was babysitting me. Normally she would have come to our house to sit for both my sister and me, but my sister was at a sleepover, and Marilyn felt bad for me not being able to go because it was an all-girls thing. So she suggested we go trick-or-treating twice, first in my neighborhood and then in hers. My mother had picked out a Jedi Knight costume for me. But Marilyn knew that I really wanted to go as Eric Draven in The Crow. I wore the Jedi costume in my neighborhood, but when we got to Marilyn’s house, she told me that she had a surprise for me.
